We are very proud to announce the opening of SUNVADO, our brand new organic avocado processing facility in Ethiopia. The Sunvado factory has succesfully completed its first test-runs and is now ramping up production. The first products should be ready for export in the coming weeks. With this new project, Tradin Organic will be able to bring organic virgin avocado oil and organic refined avocado oil to the market. For more information on our factory and sourcing project, check out the Sunvado website
Our project for organic avocado oil in Ethiopia started in 2018 with the vision to offer smallholder farmers access to the international export market and to boost their income. The processing facility is located in Yirgalem, Southern Ethiopia and we are working with more than 30,000 local organic smallholder farmers. Throughout 2018 and 2019 we worked together with the local farm cooperatives to set up an organic monitoring system and obtain organic certifications. At the same time the construction of our state-of-the-art organic avocado oil processing line started. By early 2019 , the farmer cooperatives obtained the organic certifications and in August 2019 the factory produced its first batches of organic avocado oil.
Organic Avocado Oil
From the Sunvado factory in Ethiopia, Tradin Organic will be able to offer both organic extra virgin avocado oil and organic refined avocado oil.
New Opportunities for Farmers
Our organic avocados are not grown on large scale commercial plantations. Instead, they grow on organic coffee farms, where the farmers use the avocado trees to provide shade for their coffee. Before the opening of the Sunvado processing facility, the organic avocado farmers did not have access to an export market for their avocados. Some of the avocados were sold on the local market at very low prices, but most of the avocados were not collected or harvested and left to rot. We made it our mission to change that.
Now that the Sunvado facility is up-and-running, the farmers can obtain a better price for their avocadoes. In addition, we helped to set up the organic certification for our farmers, which gives them access to a Premium organic price.
Besides providing opportunities for farmers, Sunvado also helps create jobs in a region that offers limited employment opportunities. During the avocado season, our processing facility employs around 60 workers, half of which are women. In addition, our avocado sourcing operation employs nearly 200 extension workers, field staff, harvesters and collectors.
