Tradin Organic has secured a 3-year grant from the Dutch RVO’s Social Sustainability Fund to enhance the working environment for an estimated 2,275 coconut sugar farmers in Indonesia and ensure a stable, high-quality supply.
Together with our partners Daya Alami, Inagro, LPPSLH, and Imset, we are excited to announce the launch of the “Indonesia’s Sweet Spot: Livelihood Resilience through Innovation for Safe, Organic Coconut Sugar Production” project.
Supported by the Dutch Social Sustainability Fund (SSF) through the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO), the project aims to enhance farmer livelihoods, improve working conditions, and secure a sustainable supply of high-quality, responsibly sourced coconut sugar.
The three-year project will primarily benefit 2,275 farmers and their households in Central Java, Indonesia, around the Purbalingga and Banyumas regions. By strengthening socially responsible business practices within the coconut sugar supply chain, Tradin Organic seeks to meet the growing market demand for organic, low-carbon ingredients while improving the overall working environment for farmers.
Key Initiatives and Impact Areas
The project will focus on multiple workstreams designed to ensure better health, economic security, and environmental sustainability for participating farmers:
Improved Cooking Technology: Introducing advanced cooking stoves to improve farmer working conditions and health, lower costs, and reduce carbon emissions associated with sugar production.
Carbon Insetting Program: Researching and establishing a carbon insetting program to reduce the supply chain’s environmental footprint.
Living Income and Wage Research: Evaluating current income levels and research interventions to support a living income for farmers and a living wage for factory workers associated in the coconut sugar chain.
Dwarf Coconut Tree Feasibility: Assessing the viability of cultivating dwarf coconut trees to minimize accidents and ease labor for farmers.
Training and Capacity Building: Enhancing training on organic integrity, food safety, and productivity.
A Commitment to Social Sustainability
This project aligns with the Social Sustainability Fund’s mission to support socially responsible business practices in international value chains. Tradin Organic and its partners are dedicated to creating a sustainable model for coconut sugar production, benefiting both the local communities and the environment.
