Moldova - Organic Grains & Walnuts

Moldova may be a small country, but due to its temperate climate and rich soil, it has great potential for organic agriculture. Bordering Romania and the Ukraine, Moldovan agriculture has long relied on traditional agricultural practices requiring little to no chemical inputs. Although Moldova is a landlocked country, it is located close to the Black Sea with easy access to sea ports. We source a variety of organic products from Moldova, including walnuts, grains, sunflower kernels and legumes.

Working with Organic Farmers

Working with Organic Farmers

During the last couple of years, Tradin Organic has been working with partners in Moldova to support organic farmers in the country. The rich soils hold high levels of humus and, due to the low use of agrochemical application in the country, the risk of chemical residues is relatively low. Together with our local partners we are providing technical support to the farmers to help them set up their control systems which are necessary for the organic certification. The trainers also receive technical support to enable them to keep up their productivity while in line with international organic standards.

Organic Grains - Ideal for Crop Rotation

Organic Grains - Ideal for Crop Rotation

Our organic grain farmers are predominantly located in the eastern regions of Moldova. Organic grains are an ideal product to grow in a crop rotation system, a annual process that sees farmers rotate crops on an piece of land to maintain optimum soil health. Using crop rotation, our grain farmers combine their organic wheat and sorghum production with the cultivation of other crops like organic sunflower seeds, soy beans, corn, etc. For this reason, we can supply a variety of organic grains, legumes and seeds from Moldova.

Sourcing Organic Walnuts

Sourcing Organic Walnuts

Moldova is one of Europe’s biggest producers of walnuts, with trees grown all over the country and even found on the side of the road. With annual walnut production growing rapidly, we work with local partners in Moldova to take advantage of the country's optimum growing conditions and source our organic walnuts from the region. Thanks to their organic certification, the Moldovan farmers can sell their walnuts at an organic premium. After harvest, the organic walnuts are shelled locally, providing employment during the harvesting season.
