How our organic goji berries are aiding desert communities

How our organic goji berries are aiding desert communities

Our organic goji plantations are located on remote high plains at the foot of the Himalayas. There are no other farms, industries or residential areas for miles around our farms. This clean environment helps our farmers to grow their goji berries organically and reduces the risk of contamination from external sources. Our goji producers are working hard to keep their environment healthy and clean.

Organic goji berries from the plains of the Tibetan Plateau

Our organic goji berries grow in the Tibetan plateau in China. These Himalayan highlands provide stunning mountain views, as well as a perfect climate for some of the best quality organic goji berries. At an altitude of around 3,200m (10,500ft) above sea level, our project is one of the highest growing regions for goji berries in the world. Due to the high altitude, our organic goji berries have a slightly more acidic taste, and they are even richer in flavonoids than other goji berries.

Looking after workers

Looking after workers

Our organic goji berries are providing new opportunities for local farmers and workers. During the peak season, our goji berry project employs about 1,000 workers on the farms and in the drying and processing facilities. Most of the field workers are Tibetan shepherds who use the goji harvest to earn some extra income. The decent wages at the goji plantations are a welcome supplement to the income of the workers. The workers are also provided with proper housing facilities at the plantations. They also receive nutritious meals, with vegetables from the on-site

Pushing back the desert with goji berries

Pushing back the desert with goji berries

The dry, wind-swept plains of the Tibetan Plateau are at serious risk of desertification. Our organic goji berry project is helping to reclaim soil from the encroaching desert. Our project is part of an effort to replant these dry highlands with drought resistant plants and shrubs, in order to stop soil erosion and to push back the desert. Being one of the few crops to endure these harsh conditions, goji berries not only help to protect the soil, they also provide a welcome economic opportunity for the farmers of the Tibetan Plateau. The goji berry plantations are instrumental in bringing back vegetation to the dry highlands, helping to protect the local biodiversity.
