Selet Hulling PLC was established in December 2007 as a joint venture between Kaleb Service Farmers House (KSF) and The Organic Cooperation BV (TOC).
KSF is an Ethiopian Company that is specialized in the export of different agricultural food products, which include oil seeds, coffee and different types of Ethiopian spices and also focus in the import of different agricultural machineries into Ethiopia. TOC is a Dutch based holding company for Tradin Organic Agriculture BV, Trabocca BV, Holland Business Winged-Ox and SunOpta Foods Europe.
Together they set out to create the food and bakery industry’s premier top quality supplier of certified organic hulled sesame seeds for a healthier living. To accomplish this, approximately, 1,500 farming families, located in the remote area of the Humera district, in the Tigray region, North West of Ethiopia, close to the border with Sudan and Eritrea, joined us in the efforts to make this happen. These families are unified and organized under their own managed cooperative, Fana. Fana farmers are then provided the necessary training and tools to cultivate organic sesame seeds, which are then packed and sent to a top-of-the-range quality HACCP operated, organic certified hulling factory in Addis Ababa. The hulled sesame seeds are then exported worldwide and used in all sorts of products, from sushi rolls to hamburger buns.
This project has not only had a positive impact on the Ethiopian economy, but also on the lives of many Ethiopian people. Benefit such as, a secure and steady job, a steady income, a higher income from the organic premium, local health and educational support, and environmental preservation of their soil through organic farming practices.
Looking forward, this projects will expand their services into the production of roasted hulled sesame, sesame oil, tahini and halva. Additionally, we strive to initiate the internationally certified organic production of cotton, soya beans and mung beans on Selet’s own farm, with an out growers’ scheme composed of more than 1,500 farming families within the vicinity of the remote area of Humera.
